How Efficient is it at purifying your room’s air content?

The Honeywell HPA200 air purifier is capable of cleaning all the air in a fairly large room up to 5 times an hour.

So why is this important?

When it comes to buying an Air Purifier, there are several important factors you need to consider. One is how effectively and quickly it will clean your room. You should also consider how easy it will be to keep your room clean. The industry standard measures this with an ACH rating (units of Air Change per Hour).

The higher your air purifiers ACH rating is, the better. ACH is a measure of the cleaning levels of your purifier. Generally, it’s recommended that you should buy one with an ACH rating of at least 4 to help relieve allergies. The HPA200 Air Purifier has an ACH rating of 5 so it’s pretty good. Intensive care rooms in hospitals have an ACH of 6 for cleaning room air.

How well does HPA200 clean particles from the air (AHAM CADR)?

The Honeywell True HEPA HPA200 Allergen Remover  has been independently assessed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). Their ratings are recognised by many bodies such as the EPA. The commonly recognised standard for judging Air purifiers is the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). The higher the rate, the faster your appliance has been found to be able to filter the air in a room.

Each air purifier is tested in the same size room on its ability to filter tobacco smoke, dust and pollen and given a grade for each. So you can use these grades to compare various air purifiers. The Honeywell HPA200 is graded as:
Tobacco Smoke 200, Dust 190 and Pollen 180. Their ideal rating for smoke is 2/3 times the area of the room, so the CADR of this HEPA Allergen purifier is ideal for its 310 square foot capacity.

So how does this Air Purifier actually work?

This air purifying appliance actually comes with two different filters – an Activated Carbon Pre-Filter and 2 separate True HEPA filters.

Honeywell HPA200 Activated Carbon Pre-Filter

Honeywell True HEPA HPA200 Allergen RemoverActivated carbon has tiny highly absorbent pores that greatly increase its surface area. This helps it to trap, absorb or reduce odors. It also removes up to 200 chemical contaminants. These include chlorine, sediment, and organic vapors (volatile organic compounds – VOC’s) from gasoline, painting and other processes.

One advantage of having a separate odor reducing carbon pre-filter is that it can filter out larger particle sizes from the air. So they can remove particles that range from 0.5 to 50 microns in size before they reach your hepa filters. This means your HEPA filters can last longer, you don’t need to change them as often and you can save some money.

Honeywell HPA200 True HEPA Air Filters

Honeywell’s HEPA HPA200 Allergen Remover has 2 True HEPA filters. You may well have heard about HEPA cleaners and filters, but what is True HEPA? HEPA is short for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. Ordinary HEPA cleaners can clean up to 99% of the particles from your rooms air from sources such as pet dander (pet hair) and dust. These are relatively large particles of 2 microns size or bigger.

True HEPA air purifiers like the Honeywell HPA 200 are even better. They can capture tiny particles as small as 0.3 microns and clean up to 99.97% of the particles in your room. Tiny particles of this size are large enough to penetrate your lungs and cause damage. Using a True HEPA Air Purifier means you’ll be able to get rid of a lot more allergens. This includes those from mold, dust pollen, tobacco smoke and other sources that ordinary HEPA cleaners can’t handle.

Don’t be tempted to buy purifiers with “HEPA-Type” filters as this is just a marketing term.. There is no standard for these, and so there is no guarantee of any level of performance.

While Honeywell’s HEPA filters can be expensive, you may find other-brand replacement HEPA filters cheaper. In any case you only need to change them about every 6 months – while using your appliance constantly.

So what kind of controls does HPA200 have?

Honeywell’s HPA200 Allergen Remover is designed with easy tap (or swipe) controls, built with touch based technology. These electronic touch Controls have no mechanical moving parts. This means they won’t wear out unlike most dial knobs. In addition, they are both easy to clean and sealed so they are resistant to any damage from liquid spills or cleaners. If you find it hard to turn knobs you’ll find the controls on the HPA200 much easier to use. This is a useful feature for anyone with rheumatism, arthritis  or an injury, or just about everyone else.

The attractive large controls are back-lit and labelled to make it easy to understand their functions. They are also located on top of the air purifier unit so you can access them more much easily.

Honeywell HPA200: What settings does it have and can you do with it?

This Air Purifier comes with 4 settings for purifying the air in your home. The slowest and least powerful “General Clean” setting is adequate for everyday use for most of us.

Honeywell True HEPA HPA200 Allergen Remover

The next setting “Germ” will be of greater benefit when it’s cold or during the flu season. Its optimized to clean up flu and cold causing germs. If members of your family suffer from allergies, then they will benefit from the “Allergen” setting. This is very useful when there is lots of pollen about. Its also useful at any time if they’re sensitive to general allergies.

Finally there is the most powerful and speedy Turbo setting for maximum air purification. This is great for using after a dust storm, or after a holiday away. Its also great for a short while when you’ve just arrived home from work for example. This setting is pretty noisy. You may want switch it on when you’re leaving home and set it to work for a fixed period of time 2, 4 or 8 hours.

Many users however keep this HEPA air purifier switched on for 24 hours a day without any problems.
If you’re worried about knowing when to change your filter, you don’t need to. The Honeywell True HEPA HPA200 Allergen Remover has a dimmer button to dim the controls lights. It also has Electronic replacement filter reminders so you know exactly when its time to change your filters.

So, How does this HPA200 Air Purifier actually work?

This Honeywell air purifier unit filters the air by using mechanical filtration. So it uses a fan to pull in particle-filled air from the room and force it through its filters. This is  noisier than using units that lack fans.. These often depend on using ionization or static charges to attract particles.

Fan based units with carbon and HEPA filters (like the Honeywell True HEPA HPA200) are far more effective at removing microscopic allergens. Why? Because like most Honeywell air purifiers, they powerfully draw in and clean all the air in the room. Static units are only effective for cleaning air that drifts within inches of the unit.

Honeywell True HEPA HPA200 Allergen Remover Energy Efficiency

This unit is ENERGY STAR qualified. That means the HPA200 has been designed with modern technology to use 10-50% less energy than standard appliances. So, you can use less energy, save more money and reduce greenhouse emissions. This also reduces air pollutants that cause global warming and disasters. You can easily find replacement filters if you need either a HEPA or carbon filter replacement.

What happens if this Air Purifier breaks down?

This Honeywell Air Filter unit comes with a limited warranty of 5 years for Parts and service. The battery isn’t covered. However, both labor and parts are warrantied. If if it gets damaged Honeywell will either repair it or ship you a replacement unit.
